Music Review Roundup – January and February 2014

Kid Cudi – Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon
Review: Satellite Flight was originally intended to be an EP, building anticipation for Kid Cudi’s return to his successful Man on the Moon album series. It probably would have worked better if it had stayed an EP. As it is, the album basically just sounds like a typical Kid Cudi release, which was interesting and fresh when Cudi first came on the scene (in 2008), but now it just feels boring and stale. We have already heard these types of tracks from him before, and they were better too. Cudi is still an extremely talented artists and there are some fantastic moments (especially from his production soundscapes, which he shares with Dot Da Genius on three tracks), but all in all it is pretty disappointing. It might be time for Cudi to start working with new collaborating producers again to help grow his sound. 2/5 Available for download here

ScHoolboy Q – Oxymoron
Review: The black hippy MC, ScHoolboy Q, has dropped an early contender for hip hop album of the year. Lyrically, Q is very conflicted about his place in the world. He is a budding rap superstar, but still feels connected to the streets – which can be very much heard in the sound of the album – and he still wants to engage in the party lifestyle, but he is a father now. It is definitely worth checking out for hip hop fans. 4/5 Available for download here

Broken Bells – After the Disco
Review: James Mercer and Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) are back with another collaboration (or as some might say, a new The Shins’ album but with Danger Mouse producing and co-writing). After the Disco is a very catchy pop rock album that almost feels too tight and clean (maybe a byproduct of Mercer and Burton being great musicians). There is not much raw energy, leaving it feeling a bit stagnant, but at the same time the songs are all pretty great and infectious. Fans of The Shins will definitely find something to like here with After the Disco. 3/5 Available for download here

Dum Dum Girls – Too True
Review: Too True is the third album from this LA band. While lead singer Dee Dee’s emotive singing is still utterly compelling, the songs on Too True suffer from rather bland production. They seem to drift into the background, not demanding for the listener’s full attention. There is nothing wrong with that style of passive music, but it feels like a letdown given the groups usual striking raw quality that begs for attention. 3/5 Available for download here

St. Vincent – St. Vincent
Review: Annie Clark is again in fantastic form on her fourth solo album, working with for the third time with producer John Congleton. St. Vincent (the album) feels almost like a concept album as it focuses on themes of what it means to be a person in the digital age, an age in which we create the role of ourselves (or who we hope we will be) and then promote that role to the world digitally. Musically, this set of songs is Clark’s most ambitious. They are funky and accessible, yet still have a definite fringe aesthetic. It is the best album so far this year. 4/5 Available for download here

Warpaint – Warpaint
Review: Warpaint also hails from Los Angeles. There self-titled second album is a haunting, brooding experience of beautifully harmonized vocals that feels all consuming, and maybe even devastating if you let yourself be completely taken away. It oozes with atmosphere that may not immediately grab you; but once it does, it pulls you in and devours you – sirens calling you into the rocks. 4/5 Available for download here

Music Spotlight – Favorite Music of 2012: Part 5

ScHoolboy Q – There He Go
There He Go is off ScHoolboy Q’s album Habits & Contradictions. Producer Sounwave builds a fantastic beat off a sample of Menoema’s Wet and Rusting, and ScHoolboy Q’s flow is tonally a perfect match for it. It is an addictive track that is among the best from Q’s great album (another track to check out is Hands on the Wheel). Available for download: here

Sleigh Bells – Comeback Kid
Comeback Kid is off Sleigh Bells’ album Reign of Terror. The track mixes an abrasive (almost metal) Derek Miller beat made up of thrashing guitars and a kicking drum machine with Alexis Krauss’s tantalizingly sweet vocals. It is quite an aesthetically compelling combination (and something that has often been in Sleigh Bells’ favor). Available for download: here

TNGHT – Goooo
Goooo is off TNGHT’s debut EP TNGHT. Producers Lunice and Hudson Mowhawke have created a brazen sound, mixing electronic sensibilities and southern style hip hop 808 drums, which also has a clean precise sheen to it, while still feeling lush. Goooo jumps out of the speakers, and the listener knows they are in for something great when through heavy drums start hitting. Available for download: here

The Weeknd – Twenty Eight
Twenty Eight is off The Weeknd’s album Trilogy (as one of the bonus tracks). The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) was one of the great breakthrough artists of 2011. Twenty Eight (like most of his work on Trilogy) has a dark and regretful tone, while feeling very personal. Doc McKinney and Illangelo provide a simple backing beat, allowing Tesfaye’s vocals to shine (which at times remind me of Michael Jackson). Available for download: here

The xx – Angels
Angels is off The xx’s album Coexist. Jamie xx’s musical accompaniment has a quiet and somber tone, while Romy Madley Croft’s vocals are seductively intimate. The xx seem to use negative space to their advantage in creating an aesthetic environment of intimacy and gravity – as if this track were only for the ears of its listener. There is something very beguiling about it. Available for download: here

Childish Gambino – Royalty Mixtape (2012) – Review

Review: Following up Childish Gambino’s first commercial LP Camp (which is fantastic), Royalty seems to signify a change in style for Gambino. It sounds much more like a typical hip hop release than Camp, his 2011 EP or Culdesac musically and lyrically. Royalty has a ton of features, when past Gambino albums did not, including ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Bun B, Nipsey Hussle, RZA, Danny Brown, and Ghostface Killah. A more interesting and off-beat feature is Beck, who features and co-produces on Silk Pillow, while producing another track. The production is good with Gambino handling most of it himself (while production partner Ludwig Goransson, who co-produced all of Camp and EP, only co-produces two songs). SKYWLKR and Boi-1da each add two tracks as well. Lyrically, Donald Glover seems more interested in more clichéd hip hop topics like being rich, having money and wealth (which seems to be the main theme on this mixtape) than his usual self-reflexive and witty pop culture infused wordplay. There is still some of that too, but there is certainly a noticeable switch in lyrical focus. This seems to be a more self-assured MC, with the success of Camp, who now feels comfortable boasting not just about his skills on the mic but also about fame, money, girls, cars, cloths, and all the stuff that hip hop is oversaturated with. As with most mixtapes, there are probably six to eight tracks that are forgettable. However, there are eight or so tracks that are fantastic, making this mixtape well worth checking out for fans of Childish Gambino and newcomers alike. 3/5

Essential Tracks:
1)      Unnecessary – Featuring ScHoolboy Q & Ab-Soul, produced by Donald Glover
2)      Shoulda Known – Produced by Donald Glover
3)      We Ain't Them – Produced by Donald Glover & Ludwig Goransson

Ab-Soul – Control System (2012) – Review

Review: Ab-Soul is probably the least known member of the Black Hippy crew (Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Jay Rock), but like the other members is a very talented MC. His second album features an eclectic mix of musical styles, all of which Ab-Soul rhymes over very effectively. The record is peppered with supporting guests from his Black Hippy crew to Jhene Aiko, Danny Brown, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Alori Joh. Though, I would say that he is at his best when sharing a track with a member of his crew. TDE’s usual group of producers also feature heavily on the album, and provide excellent beats as usual. Control System is a good album, musically different than most things out right now and well worth hip hop fans’ time (the song ILLuminate is worth getting for sure if nothing else), but Ab-Soul is still not quite on the same level as Kendrick, Q and Rock (who have all put out better albums in the last year). 3/5

Editor’s Essential Tracks:
1)      ILLuminate – Produced by Skhye Hutch, featuring Kendrick Lamar
2)      Black Lip Bastard (Remix) – Produced by Willie B, featuring Black Hippy
3)      SOPA – Produced by Nez & Rio, featuring ScHoolboy Q

ScHoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions (2012) – Review

ScHoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions
The Los Angeles group Black Hippy has produced four very good MCs (chief among them Kendrick Lamar). ScHoolboy Q’s first album Setbacks (released last year) was well received and exhibits a few great tracks. On his sophomore release Habits & Contradictions, Q stays close to his indie roots both in the album’s guests and production. Feature wise, A$AP Rocky, Curren$y and his Black Hippy friends highlight the album. The Digi+Phonics (Sounwave and Tae Beast in particular) produce most of the album and do a great job (I especially like Sounwave’s Menomena sample on There He Go). Q also works with better known producers like Best Kept Secret, Lex Luger and The Alchemist, but to more mixed results. A$AP Ty Beats also gives Q a fun beat on NigHtmare on Figg St., and DJ Dahi creates a catchy and infectious track for Sexting (a song I feel like I should not like, but cannot help but like). Like Setbacks, Habits & Contradictions is a good indie hip hop album and shows off ScHoolboy Q’s skill and quality as an MC. While I do not think he is yet quite on the same level musically as Kendrick Lamar, he certainly offers a lot to the genre and this album is a solid work. 4/5

Editor’s Essential Tracks:
1)      There He Go – Produced by Sounwave
2)      Hands on tHe WHeel – Produced by Best Kept Secret, featuring A$AP Rocky
3)      Blessed – Produced by Dave Free, featuring Kendrick Lamar
