Movie of the Week - Black Book

This week’s movie is Black Book (2006).

Black Book is a WWII film about a young woman who works for the Dutch resistance after her family is killed by the Nazis, infiltrating the regional Gestapo headquarters only to fall in love with the commanding German officer, resulting in both sides being after her. The film is directed by Paul Verhoeven and stars Carice van Houten in her international breakthrough role. What makes the film great is the saga like story of van Houten’s character, as she goes through the war with close encounter after close encounter. The film both gives a good historical view of German occupied Holland, while being thrilling and action packed. The film works best as an epic with a spy narrative thrown in. Check out the trailer.
