Must-See of the
Month:
Rush
(Ron Howard) –
Sports Drama – Sep 27
Plot Summary: In the mid-1970s Formula 1 racing had
a great rivalry pushing two drivers, Austrian Niki Lauda and Brit James Hunt,
to the limits of what was possible (and maybe even further). Filmmakers: Hollywood director Ron Howard is known
for his big awards-friendly films like Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, and Frost/Nixon and his thrillers
like The Da Vinci Code (and
maybe also for his comedy misfires). Rush looks like a combination of the best
parts of both types of filmmaking. Howard has also assembled a stellar group of
collaborators, including; composer Hans
Zimmer (Man
of Steel), cinematographer Anthony
Dod Mantle (Trance),
production designer Mark Digby
(Never
Let Me Go), and screenwriter Peter Morgan (who
also wrote Frost/Nixon). Cast: The film stars Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl as Hunt and Lauda
respectively, with Olivia Wilde,
Alexandra Maria Lara, and Natalie Dormer featuring in
support. Expectations: While Ron Howard has never
been a brilliant filmmaker, he does have some inspired moments. He is at his
best when he blends action, suspense, and emotional drama with the strong
performances he usually gets from his actors and just lets it play naturally, not
trying to force too much out of the narrative (and on a side note, I will admit
to loving two of his early films as a kid: Willow and Parenthood). Rush looks like a
fantastic blending of these elements, combined with a seemingly perfectly cast
group of actors. In a rather weak month, Rush stands out as a film that looks
to be very entertaining and one that might even be a dark horse come awards
season. Trailer: Here. Review: Here.
