This week’s movie is Run Lola Run (1998).
The German thriller is about Lola, a young woman who has twenty minutes to both find and deliver 100,000 Deutschmarks to her boyfriend to save his life. Writer-director Tom Tykwer received international notability with this film. Its manic style and techno score helped usher in a cool trend of European indie films and directors into Hollywood (along with films like Trainspotting). It also reintroduced the States to German cinema (allowing films like The Edukators, Goodbye Lenin!, Head-On, Downfall, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, The Lives of Others, and The Counterfeiters to get distribution – which is fantastic, as they are all brilliant films). The score is by Tykwer’s band Pale 3 (with Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek). Frank Griebe’s cinematography fits Tykwer’s shooting style well and Alexander Manasse’s production design is well matched to the narrative also. Star of the film Franka Potente found herself a Hollywood star overnight as well. While the film’s style is fresh and abstract (and resembles lots of film school stuff I have seen since), it is the narrative structure and the great performances that elevate this film to being the breakout hit that it is (was). It was the right film for the right time, in a sense. Fans of unique films and European cinema should enjoy this. Check out the trailer.
Run Lola Run is not the kind of movie I was looking for. This kind of story we have already seen in many films. Although this movie is a big hit but I don't like it. Franka Potente gave a brilliant performance. All I can say watch the trailer of the movie and decide yourself.
