At the Movies – December 2013 – Part 1: Independent Films

Art-House Dramas:

August: Osage County (John Wells) – Dramedy – Dec 25
Plot Summary: The Weston family is full of strong-willed women, each with their own opinions. Over the years they have grown apart. But when a family crisis brings them all together at their childhood home in Oklahoma, they must all face each other again, letting dysfunction and maybe even reconciliation rule the day. Filmmakers: Director John Wells’s first feature The Company Men was a good ensemble drama that succeeded on its strong performances. August: Osage County looks like it is very much in the same vein, but with an even bigger, more illustrious cast. He is working with composer (and beautiful guitar player) Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel), cinematographer Adriano Goldman (Jane Eyre), and production designer David Gropman (Life of Pi). Cast: The ensemble features Abigail Breslin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Juliette Lewis, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Sam Shepard, Dermot Mulroney, Julianne Nicholson, Margo Martindale, and Chris Cooper. Expectations: August: Osage County is right in the middle of the awards season buzz, though I suspect that it will only get acting nominations if any – specifically one for Margo Martindale. It looks like it will be a decent drama, with lots of actors grandstanding, but really nothing too special – especially when set against the bigger profile films coming out this month (and that have come out this year). All that said, this does have a fantastic cast and is probably worth seeing based on that alone. Trailer: Here
