A vicious battle between the light and dark forces of the Mortal Kombat realm has taken the lives of all but two warriors, Raiden (light) and Shao Kahn (dark). On top of a pyramid the two do battle. However, Raiden soon realizes that he will not be able to defeat Shao Kahn, and in an act of desperation sends a message back through time using an enchanted amulet to warn himself of the impending fate of the Mortal Kombat realm. As Shao Kahn raises his hammer to deliver the final blow, Raiden whispers the words, “he must win” (however, Raiden does not specifically say who). Through a series of visions Raiden from the past receives the message and gathers that it is Lui Kang who must be the one to win the original Mortal Kombat tournament and save the world from Shao Kahn's impending reign.
